Those who have served for any length of time inside the military is familiar with those metallic ovals worn on a string around the neck. Officially they may be identification tags but just about everyone calls them dog tags. Dog tags have their source in the Civil War, yet only unofficially. Soldiers in those days would often write fundamental information about themselves on a document and pin it for their uniform in case they were wiped out or badly injured. A few units paid for more durable recognition. But there was no standardization as to what was included. These identification tags identify essential information about the wearer: name, Ssn, blood type and spiritual preference.
