The History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day has its roots in World War I. The holiday actually started out as “Armistice Day” and was originally created to mark the date when hostilities ended between the Allied nations and Germany.
The armistice took effect at 11am on November 11, 1918—hence why Veterans Day is always observed on November 11th. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution calling for Armistice Day to be observed nationwide. Then, in 1938, it became an official national holiday.
In 1954, after World War II had seen more than 16 million Americans serve in uniform, Congress changed the name of the holiday from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in order to recognize all veterans, not just those who served in WWI. And the rest, as they say, is history!
How We Celebrate Veterans Day Today
So how do we Observance today? Well, there are a few things that are traditionally done on this day. For starters, many people choose to display the flag of the United States at half-staff until noon. This is done as a sign of respect for all fallen soldiers.
Businesses also typically close for the day or have reduced hours so that their employees can enjoy a long weekend.
